Job Title: Direct Labor
Location: Mitchell, SD
Reports To: Shift Supervisor

Areas of Accountability

All areas of accountability to be delivered in a manner that aligns with the values and business strategy of Farmers Union Industries, LLC. A direct laborer will specialize in one of the following jobs.

  • Material Handler
  • Retort Helper
  • Depalletizer
  • Can Unloader
  • Chub Peeler
  • Pallet Stacker
  • Meat Loader
  • Batcher
  • Label Operator

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work safely and comply with company and regulatory safety/environmental policies, practices, and procedures
  • Maintain highest level of confidentiality, customer service, and professionalism to promote a positive image of the company
  • Operate forklift to load and unload trucks
  • Select, clean, pack, and palletize pet food
  • Load and unload items onto equipment for processing
  • Operate multiple unit operations, opportunities to train and cross train in different areas
  • Move product to the proper area, following all department and QA procedures
  • Transfer finished goods to pallets and move to the holding freezer
  • Ensure proper housekeeping throughout the shift and in all department areas

Situations may arise that require employees to temporarily or permanently assume responsibility for tasks not specifically outlined in this job description. Employees may be requested to work additional hours and/or accommodate a heavier than normal workload


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), preferred
  • Forklift certified, preferred
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a routine basis
  • Ability to push/pull up to 100 pounds on a routine basis
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb frequently
  • Ability to handle hot and cold conditions (must dress according to weather) and be aware of any wet floors or other hazards
